LinkedIn social networking

LinkedIn social networking can be a great way to promote your home business. In the beginning, Facebook was more popular among and exclusively for college students. The service now (as of August 2012) has over 955 million users worldwide ranging from teens to people over 60. LinkedIn has about 175 million users worldwide; most of them professionals and predominantly hailing from the United States, Europe and India.

LinkedIn social networkingLinkedIn social networking was founded in December 2002, and launched in May 2003. It was founded by Reid Hoffman who is now the executive Vice president of PayPal. The present CEO of LinkedIn is Jeff Weiner, who was previously a Yahoo! Inc. Executive. The headquarters of LinkedIn are located in Mountain View, California with offices in other parts of the United States and the world such as Chicago, New York, Omaha and London. A recent study conducted by the American firm Nielsen Claritas, showed that Facebook users are more inclined to use other professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Here are a few reasons why:
  1. LinkedIn is a network with 65 million business professionals around the world.
  2. The average LinkedIn member has an average annual household income of $109,000.
  3. One person creates a LinkedIn login every second.
  4. Nearly 50% of LinkedIn social networking members have decision-making authority for their companies.

It's easy to see why LinkedIn is considered the world's largest audience of influential, affluent professionals in one place. Like other forms of Internet marketing, marketing a small or home business on LinkedIn is relatively inexpensive and provides a lot of bang for the buck. If that's the market you are trying to reach, you need to get in the game.

Getting started with LinkedIn social networking

In order to get started with marketing your business on LinkedIn, you'll need to:
  1. Understand how LinkedIn social networking works.
  2. Create a LinkedIn login, if you're not already a member.
  3. Create a great LinkedIn profile to put your best forward when people come to check you out.
  4. Ideally, create a LinkedIn company page for your business. You'll have the opportunity to do that as you are completing the resume section of your LinkedIn social networking profile, and your company page will be automatically linked to from the resume in your profile.

If you're reviving an old job search, growing your business, or looking to expand your LinkedIn savvy, take a look at these tips to get back on the right path:

  1. Be very selective of the companies and people you approach

    - People you don't know will always listen if you can help them or their friends and colleagues but you must first make sure there is a very good chance they will 'benefit' from an association with you. Take time researching the LinkedIn social networking database and upgrade to a premium account to make best use of the system.
  2. Respect people's time and catch their interest

    - Keep an introductory message very brief and personal, explaining what you have in common and why you've made an approach. It should take the recipient no more than a few seconds to read. Naturally if people are interested they'll dig deeper and look at your LinkedIn profile summary page and browse the information resources available.
  3. Outline your value proposition on your profile

    - To help people further assess interest, explain your value proposition and networking objectives on your LinkedIn profile summary and company page. Make sure they are easy to read and understand - invest time to create video content, presentations, documents and blogs. Think of the 'experience' you create for your visitors.
  4. Communicate politely, honestly and respectfully

    - Save humour for off line communication or at least once there is a very clear sign of mutual interest. Always thank people for any assistance or thoughts they may share and act immediately on any request for help. Make introductions wherever possible, particularly for those out of work.
  5. Research before responding

    - To initiate traction and build relationships with people who reply to an approach it is essential to take time to read their profiles (and resources) in detail. Follow up by asking leading questions which demonstrate your interest in them and their business and increase dialogue.
  6. Get the relationship offline ASAP

    - The sooner you can 'press the flesh' the better but these meetings are costly in time and expense. To qualify mutual interest and warrant a face to face meeting, to save you the time, get an assistant to call the interested party to set up a 15-30 minute phone call or better still arrange a Skype video call which is more social - do this the same day..whilst the 'iron's hot'.
