Yammer Yammer, Inc. is a freemium enterprise social network service - this means that unlike other social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter – which are designed for public use – Yammer is designed for private communication for members within a given organization. It was launched in 2008 and sold to Microsoft in 2012. It is a social network for businesses and companies. What's so useful about this? The basic set up is free, easy to use, and, perhaps, most importantly, it provides a private, manageable, and secure online space for businesses to communicate. If your board room created a social networking site, this is what it would look like.

How to get setup with Yammer?

If you're creating a Yammer account for your business, you'll need a valid company email address. You'll be sent a confirmation email and then you can log into the Yammer system. If you're being invited to join a Yammer network, you'll receive an email from the network's administrator; follow the link, and you'll be directed to Yammer's main page.

After feeling strangely comforted by the Facebook-like blue and white colour scheme, look to the top right corner of your screen. Here, you will find a "getting started" box that will lead you through several initial steps including, completing your profile, adding your photo, inviting others to join your network, joining groups, and getting Yammer desktops or mobile Apps.

When creating your profile and adding your photo, remember that while Yammer looks and feels like a typical social networking site, it's a business environment. Pick a work place appropriate user name and a photo where your face is visible.

Why you should use Yammer?

After initial co-workers resistance and overall disbelief that we need "another social tool", and 3 weeks test-drive I can tell you everyone loves Yammer. How do I know? You can create polls on Yammer as well. Here are 7 good reasons to bring your team to Yammer. And while you are getting convinced, do yourself a favor and get Yammer for your own company.
  1. Networking

We are a team of 15. Not large, however, not that small either. People work in several rooms and do different hours. Some meet once or twice per week. How do you get to know each other? Yammer helps team members to gradually get acquainted, learn everyone names (I'm pretty bad at this), and figure out your colleagues interests. E.g. I can look at our developer's avatar and see that he is playing the drums. I love drums. Always wanted to play. Next time we meet during launch we have a great conversation. Wouldn't happen without Yammer. It's also a great place for introvert newcomers to adjust themselves and start communicating right away.
  2. Sharing

Yammer takes care of knowledge sharing. Not only can you share a link or an article , but you can have a meaningful discussion with nested replies around any topic. Fun links and haha-videos finally have moved to their own group and people are not bombarding each other in team chat or IM conversation. Yammer plays videos right in the feed and embeds most of the pictures and saves several clicks and minutes. Yammer has also got a great bookmarklet for sharing stuff directly from web pages. Now you even don't have to copy and paste anymore.
  1. Groups

Groups are great for filtering incoming messages and getting only relevant info. I don't speak C++, so I don't miss that discussions that much. You'll be surprised how many circles (hello Google Plus) are there at even a relatively small company.
  2. Unload Email/IM

No more group emails with a link or a picture. No more chat notifications with a link or a picture. Bliss.
  3. Collaborate

Some might not know, but you can also collaborate on docs directly on Yammer. Upload a doc, open it inside Yammer and you can add comments, annotations, etc. Great for a quick collaboration session, such as brainstorming ideas, or proofreading a blog post.
  4. Polls, events, praises

No more separate emails for setting Friday party, or deciding what present to get for a birthday. Yammer takes care of all office related tasks and does it much better than email.
  5. Keep in touch on the go

Yammer works on every mobile device. So, if you are stuck somewhere, or tired of your vacation and want to check on what your colleagues are up to - fire up Yammer app on your mobile and you are all set. Yammer is a great solution for small teams to communicate, get to know each other, share interests and useful info, collaborate together and solve everyday office tasks.

Being a synchronous and asynchronous solution at the same time, it gives you benefits of real-time communication and allows to efficiently drop in and out of discussions, just as email does. And it's also free.
