What is Mission Statement?


: Defines the fundamental purpose of an organization or an enterprise, succinctly describing why it exists and what it does to achieve its Vision.

A mission statement is a formal, short, written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a sense of direction, and guide decision making. It provides "the framework or context within which the company's strategies are formulated." Historically it is associated with Christian religious groups; indeed, for many years, a missionary was assumed to be a person on a specifically religious mission. The word "mission" dates from 1598, originally of Jesuits sending ("missio", Latin for "act of sending") members abroad.

A well written mission statement can tell our story and ideals in less than 30 seconds. Provides the focus when our path forward is not clear. A lot of companies are straying from their proper course of action these days. When a company starts to expand, they start to stray away from their main objective and start pursing something totally different from their business. Such can be a disaster to you and the company so a mission statement is necessary to reaffirm what you are really trying to accomplish.


Importance of Mission Statement

In short a Mission Statement is a statement of the role, or purpose, by which an organization intends to serve its stakeholders. Describes what the organization does (current capabilities), who it serves (stakeholders), and what makes the organization unique (justification for existence). Mission statements always exist at the top level of an organization, but may also be set for different organizational levels or components. Vision Statements and Mission Statements are the inspiring words chosen by successful leaders to clearly and concisely convey the direction of the organization. By crafting a clear mission statement and vision statement, you can powerfully communicate your intentions and motivate your team or organization to realize an attractive and inspiring common vision of the future.

Many times the companies over all mission statement does not provide specific motivation for a highly specialized department. Every team or department or subgroup can benefit from a mission statement. Sometimes they can be just the problem stated as a goal. Mission statements usually provide a lighthouse that the company culture can look back to when the company loses track of itself.

When there is a mission statement to refer to, generally companies can maintain their track and avoid losing sight of what their core competencies actually are. Mission statements have been directly linked through research to greater returns on investment in companies. Measures such as return on equity have been found to be more than double in companies that have a written mission statement. Although it is difficult to determine what makes one mission statement better than another, the mere presence has a positive effect.
